Free Software: Good for Society and Good for Business
(Deb Nicholson @Software Freedom Conservancy)

Collaboration helps us go further and faster while achieving a better result. The new economy won't be carried by one-size-fits-all solutions or run by companies focused on denying access to users, students and start-ups. Success will belong to those who are collectively building and maintaining foundational free and open source software platforms and those who can hand-craft specialty solutions that run on top of those collaborative systems. Community participation is crucial to success in the shared, free and open source software future we're building. Sculpting the future of technology is a big responsability. We need to ensure that what we're building is good for society -- and for business. With a little planning and reflection, we can create sustainable and inclusive software communities that will enable us to serve both goals.

Innovate with Enterprise Open Source
(Maxim Burgerhout @Red Hat)

According to Maxim ""In your move to the cloud, you’ll take open source with you. It’s the natural thing to do: your datacenter already largely runs on open source, and we all know open source is the principal innovator these days."" During his talk, Maxime will make a case for running cloud workloads on (and with) open source software. He’ll look at what it is that enterprise open source software can bring you in the age of cloud and how to best achieve that goal.

Cerberus, an open-source integrated testing solution from retail player La Redoute allowing daily web platform release
(Antoine Craske & Benoit Dumont @La Redoute)

During their presentation, Antoine and Benoit are going to talk about Cerebrus, an open-source integrated testing solution built by the retail player La Redoute that allows daily web platform release. Inicially La Redoute's International IT team was using legacy applications from Call centers and Websites. Since the group has a lot of subsidiaries and a lot of web platforms, each with its own set of configuration and specificities, there was a big challenge in both bringing more stability to the system and also more agility in terms of change. Thanks to this tool, a lot of tests have been created and are automated enough so that the effort for that quality is kept under control. Using agile principles and organization changes, Cerberus allowed them to move from chaotic and stressful builds to a more measurable and secure build process. Today, small changes can more easily and securely go live and deliver business value in far less time. Considering that the need for such a tool is very transversal, decision was taken to release it under open source license (GPLV3) in order to distribute this framework and attract developers to join the project and improve the tool.

InnerSource: an Open Source approach to company culture
(Ben van’t Ende @Age of Peers)

Companies face a relentless struggle to create smooth internal operations and maintain cooperation between departments. Technology can provide both the tools for more effective collaboration and an important focus for collaborative development. However, implemented ineffectively it can compound divisions and create barriers. It can be a struggle for companies to get internal operations working smoothly. Cooperation between departments is essential. Especially with the speed technology is developing it is necessary to keep skills up to date. The proactive development of a user community and the use of open source collaborative strategies can have great benefits for any organisation. InnerSource takes the lessons learned from open source projects and applies them to the internal company community or culture. InnerSource can be a great tool to help break down silos, encourage collaboration and create a happier workplace.

Blockchain as a tool for our daily life
(Filipe Veiga @Caixa Mágica)

In his talk, Filipe will talk about Blockchain, a concept that has been becoming vastly used by the technologic community and a tool increasingly more useful in decentralisation processes. The early years of this technology brought us a speculative hype about the tokens circulating in the various protocols, however the industry has now come to prove its true economic value. This value can only be demonstrated by the adoption of solutions based on blockchain protocols by ordinary users and in the most common uses of everyday life.

Innovation and Net Neutrality two sides of one coin
(Thomas Lohninger @epicenter.works)

A free and open internet is one where innovation can happen without the permission of a telecom company. The three biggest mobile operators in Portugal with a combined market share of 95% all violate this principle of net neutrality and thereby create a walled garden that kills off economic growth. The internet was far more successful than any previous communication network, because it allowed innovators to compete globally from day one and gave users the freedom to choose between the best products. These benefits are lost if telecom companies are allowed to pick winners and losers and undermine our freedom to choose and offer the services we want. The European Union established protections for net neutrality in 2016. If these rules would be properly enforced in Portugal, companies would not suffer a competitive disadvantage against Silicon Valley giants or applications owned by telecom companies. It is time to ask the tough questions to politicians and regulators why our freedoms online are not protected. This talk will give an overview about the situation in Europe and locate Portugal and its telecom market within it.

"Zero-Rating is killing innovation in the internet."

Open Privacy Stack: Protection and privacy from global surveillance and malicious hackers
(David Nelsen @Darkiron)

Build your private cloud and own your privacy. David will present an open-source productivity platform called Open Privacy Stack. Think of it as Gmail, Skype, WhatsApp, and Dropbox all in one decentralized private cloud. Open source projects discussed will include Debian, Proxmox, Nextcloud, pfSense, Prosody, Bitwarden, LinOTP, Docker, I2P, and more. Mass adoption of centralized third-party cloud services has simplified data privacy invasion by an order of magnitude. Large-scale data surveillance by nation states and big tech has little to do with keeping us safe or enhancing our user experience. Those who own the data, have the power. Many consumers forfeit their data privacy for convenient and centralized free applications. They feel they have nothing to hide and therefore nothing to fear, but the tide is turning and Europe is leading the way. More people are questioning their level of privacy in the cloud and liberating themselves from the dependence of centralized big tech. This presentation will discuss in detail several enterprise open-source applications one can implement to build their own privacy stack.

It is the end of Smartphones with dumb applications, nowadays there are so many tools to add “intelligence” to your mobile application for a better user experience, for helping the user and more importantly your Business. Filipe is going to talk about one of those tools, the TensorFlow™, an open source software library for high performance numerical computation. Its flexible architecture allows easy deployment of computation across a variety of platforms (CPUs, GPUs, TPUs), and from desktops to clusters of servers to mobile and edge devices. Originally developed by researchers and engineers from the Google Brain team within Google’s AI organization, it comes with strong support for machine learning and deep learning and the flexible numerical computation core is used across many other scientific domains. - An open source machine learning framework With TensorFlow™, the open source machine learning framework, you can train your model in a closed and in your machines with your data and then just use the result in the Mobile environment.
